Beginner Affiliate Marketing Mistakes to Avoid. Where do I start here? I mean, when it comes to all the myths and fantasies about affiliate marketing, the list goes on and on. There are too many folks out there that believe affiliate marketing will bring them huge success overnight.
There are stories upon stories of affiliates earning 6 and 7 figure incomes, and while those stories are true, far too many believe their success came easily and overnight and that they will experience the same, once becoming affiliate marketers themselves.
It is a fact. There is money to be made in affiliate marketing, but the spoils of war, if you will, go through the ones that have gone through everything you can think of, and continued on. They have gone through the right of passage and are reaping the rewards that come with it…..being your own boss, not working the 9 to 5, cash flow, time freedom.
They have gone through the A-Z of affiliate marketing and know, success within this business, doesn’t come with out a price. You can’t just do the A, B, and C of affiliate marketing, it has to be all the way, there are no shortcuts.
Mistake #1: Ignorance to the Principles of SEO
Affiliate marketers advertise. SEO or Search Engine Optimization is what allows a website to rank in the first page of a search engine i.e. google or yahoo. Beginners need to make SEO their best friend. By knowing what triggers SEO the beginner can build their website around those principles.
Mistake #2: Too Much Sizzle and Not Enough Steak
Many beginners think if they have more pictures and banners all over their website it will look good. And while it may look good, it doesn’t tell their readers anything….at least not enough to buy the product they are marketing.
I’m not saying don’t put up any banners on your website, but make sure that it is accompanied but plenty of quality content that allows the reader to make an informed decision. A good rule of thumb, is for every 300 to 500 words there should be a picture/banner that goes with it. An article with 1,500 words should have 2-3 pics/banners. More than that can be over kill.
Mistake #3: There Can Only be One
Beginner and novice affiliates alike, make the mistake of promoting only one product. Have you ever gone to Amazon’s website and ordered something? What about Barnes & Noble? When you search for a particular book at Barnes & Noble for example, Rich Dad Poor Dad, here is what shows up below the searched item:
This gives the customer other options. Not having more options can run the risk of having fewer sales as well.
Mistake #4: Too Many Options
The fourth mistake swing all the way to the other side of the spectrum with options. The beginner affiliate marketer will give their reader too many options to choose from. A rule of thumb is to have at least 3 but no more than 5.
Can their be exceptions, sure, but we are talking about BEGINNER affiliate marketing mistakes. If you take note to the Barnes & Noble example above, they have 7 options…..but they are not beginners!
As a beginner I recommend sticking to the rule of thumb above otherwise you will give your readers what is called “analysis paralysis,” which will end up leading to no decision made and therefore, no sale.
Mistake# 5: Taking the “Right” Action
I talk with many beginner marketers and they are many times sponges. They are trying to read, and watch videos and webinars, and learn everything they can about affiliate marketing. This in and of itself is great. To be always learning and improving your craft.
The challenge is they have no actual plan of action. They read of so many different ways to be successful they never start one, or if they do they don’t stick to it long enough because they had no plan. They didn’t have a step by step plan of where they where going.
Any business that has ever tried to get a start up loan/funds has always had to have a business plan, and it is no different in the world of affiliate marketing.
If you have been considering the business of affiliate marketing or have already started been feel like you are just stuck and not going anywhere, then I recommend you check out my #1 recommendation for a step by step, “right” action, oriented plan for affiliate marketing.
